Game Projects:
Wasteworld: My thesis game, a massively-multiplayer turn-based strategy (4X) serious game for Facebook. My thesis explores the nature of serious games and the unique design challenges they pose, and attempts to formulate and test a hypothetical “new recipe” for serious game design. This project is the implementation of that hypothesis. At the moment it is in closed beta, with an anticipated launch on or around November 18, 2008. Watch this space for more details.
Cowboy Cave: My project for Applied Game Design, a course offered at SCAD that simulates the industry environment in order to expose students to the challenges and demands of working in the industry. Students conceive, manage, and execute their own teams and projects with minimal assistance from the professor. I was Project Lead on our game, a 3rd-person adventure game featuring a new-Western cowboy trapped in a labyrinthine mine with a robotic sidekick whom he can rebuilt and refit to meet the obstacles they face. The project website can be found here, and the GameCareerGuide postmortem describing the itcan be found here.
Rats! and Bum Rush: Board games created for Game Design Criticism & Analysis, a class featuring numerous non-digital design examinations and projects. The former was my group’s first project, a cooperative game about bumbling thieves trying to escape from a museum with a precious piece of art in spite of one or more of their number turning rat and trying to get them caught by the guard. The latter was our final project, “the game of strategic hobo conflict” in which players mobilize an army of loony hobos to try and take over a city park. The GameCareerGuide postmortem for Rats! can be found here.

Airlock: A game design document and style guide for a realistic graphic adventure set on the ISS (the International Space Station). The player takes the role of a crew member awakening in their bunk to find the station has met with some catastrophe and has lost most of its power and functionality. They must explore the crippled station, find and (optionally) rescue their fellow crew members, and ultimately devise a way to get past the station’s robotic defense systems and escape to Earth before the reactor goes critical and vaporizes the structure. This project was created for a class on narrative content design and writing for games. The complete design document can be found here.
Art Portfolios (from my undergraduate study and early graduate study, when I was focused on art-making and asset creation):
- Expanded Portfolio (photobucket) showing examples of modeling, texturing, and level design in Unreal Tournament 2003.
- Original Portfolio (flash) showing much of the same content, but also 2D illustrations, graphic art, and my artist resume.
